Test win first step for Australia
Australia celebrate with the Super Series trophy
Captain Ricky Ponting says victory in the Super Test is just the start of Australia's recovery from Ashes defeat.

"It's no compensation for losing the Ashes," said Ponting after his side beat the World XI by 210 runs in the Super Test in Sydney.

"But we've started afresh in this series, and it's extremely satisfying to beat the best players in the world.

"We've set ourselves a standard for the rest of the summer that hopefully we can live up to."

Australia's star on the final day was leg-spinner Stuart MacGill, who was not used at all during the Ashes but grabbed the last three wickets in five balls on Monday.

There were plenty of stars there who have been great players for a long time, but I didn't think about who I was up against

The match finished in four days, but the World side had done well to recover from a first innings deficit of 155, bowling the hosts out cheaply in the second innings.

"I was a little bit surprised of how easy it ended today but not through the course of the game," said Ponting.

"They proved yesterday just how dangerous they can be as a side. They got themselves right back in with a chance to win the game."

Despite criticism of the Super Series format from many quarters, Ponting gave it his backing.

"The idea of this series is fantastic and hopefully I'll get to play in a few more," he added.

MacGill said the time away from the Test side has helped him improve his focus and confidence.

"I think what I've done better and better over the last couple of seasons is not bother too much about what happens between the good balls," he explained.

"I just keep trying to bowl the best delivery I can at that particular moment and not bother about whether I bowl a full toss or get hit for four.

"There were plenty of stars there who have been great players for a long time, but I didn't think about who I was up against."
