A stand of 138 runs between Marvin Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara sparked Sri Lanka's fightback against Australia on day two of the second Test. Atapattu battled his way to an unbeaten 75 after losing Sanath Jayasuriya to a brilliant catch from Adam Gilchrist.
And he got support from Sangakkara, who was removed by Shane Warne for 74 to leave the visitors on 184-2 at close.
Earlier, Upul Chandana had taken five wickets as Sri Lanka reduced Australia to 517 all out in their first innings.
Damien Martyn was the leg spinner's first victim, trapped lbw three runs short of a century.
The leg spinner also took the wickets of Simon Katich, Darren Lehmann, who made a half-century, and Shane Warne.
The hosts had resumed on 370-2, but quickly lost day-one hero Justin Langer, the first of four wickets for the impressive Lasith Malinga.
In reply, Sri Lanka reached 67-1 at tea.
Paceman Jason Gillespie took the only wicket, with wicketkeeper Gilchrist pouncing to remove Jayasuriya for 13.
Atapattu and Sangakkara then settled in and scored valuable runs before Warne struck to hand the Australians a morale boost at the close of play.
