Australia call up MacGill

MacGill gives the Australians more spin options

Leg-spinner Stuart MacGill has been added to the Australian team for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

The Notts star will replace fast bowler Brad Williams, who has been ruled out of the series with a lower back injury.

"Given we already have four fit fast bowlers in the squad, Stuart gives us some added flexibility," said chief selector Trevor Hohns.

MacGill made the headlines in April when he made himself unavailable for a tour to Zimbabwe on moral grounds.

The 33-year-old is currently on holiday in Venice, but he has been told to return to Australia immediately.

"Although Stuart wasn't initially picked in the squad because we felt the conditions didn't warrant a second spinner, we felt he was the best bowler available to us at this point in time," added Hohns.

The Australians will also have fellow leg-spinner Shane Warne available for selection.

Warne broke his left hand playing for Hampshire earlier in the month, but he has announced he will be fit in time for the first Test in Darwin on 1 July.

The second and final Test will be played in Cairns on 9 July.

Australian squad: Ricky Ponting (capt), Adam Gilchrist (wkt), Jason Gillespie, Matthew Hayden, Simon Katich, Michael Kasprowicz, Stuart MacGill, Damien Martyn, Glenn McGrath, Justin Langer, Darren Lehmann, Shane Warne, Shaun Tait.
