C&G Trophy third round, Clontarf: Northamptonshire 267-4 (41.5 overs) beat Ireland 263-8 (50 overs) by six wickets Jason Bray set the early pace with a brisk 76 |
Northamptonshire defied the rain and a spirited Ireland performance to reach the C&G Trophy quarter-finals with a six-wicket victory in Clontarf. Martin van Jaarsveld was man of the match as he led Northants to victory with an unbeaten innings of 93.
But Van Jaarsveld was made to wait for his moment of glory as play lasted until 2015BST because of the weather.
Opener Jason Bray top-scored with 76, Peter Gillespie added a half-century to reach 263-8 in Ireland's 50 overs.
Northants can now look forward to a quarter-final tie against Warwickshire.
Captain Jason Molins was happy at Ireland's cup run despite the defeat.
"Northants are probably thinking in terms of winning the trophy; we were just happy to be in the third round," he said.
"There might have been a slight fear factor in the past but we've proved that we can compete at this level.
"We knew winning against Surrey didn't suddenly make us a great side and by the same token losing against Northants doesn't suddenly make us a bad side."
