Ireland pulled off the upset of the C&G Trophy second round when they completed a five-wicket win over Surrey.

A home side helped by several players with first-class experience in South Africa and Australia topped Surrey's score of 261 with 10 balls to spare.

Openers Jason Molins (58) and Jeremy Bray (52) left the county side shell-shocked with a stand of 103.

In a rain-hit match that spanned two days, Surrey opener Ali Brown hit 67 from 49 balls to post a daunting total.

South African Andre Botha and home-grown off-spinner Andrew White took three wickets each for the hosts.

Surrey's bowlers were unable to reap similar success, with England's Martin Bicknell yielding 55 runs in 10 overs.

His sole celebration came when Gerald Dros was caught at slip for 45, but by then the home side were within 41 runs of a famous victory.

White claimed the man-of-the-match award after hitting 20 not out in an unbroken stand of 39 with Kyle McCallan.

Ireland will host Northamptonshire in the third round.

The victory came seven years after their last win over county opposition, a Benson & Hedges Cup upset of Middlesex.

This is a very strong reality check for everyone concerned
Surrey coach Steve Rixon
Last year they celebrated victory over the Zimbabwe touring side.

Ireland spokesman Fergus Carroll told BBC Sport: "This is one of our greatest victories and only the second time we have beaten an English side in a competitive match.

"Surrey posted a good total but our openers were outstanding and it was an amazing win.

"Lots of people turned up to watch when word spread around Dublin that a huge upset could be on the cards.

"The players are absolutely delighted and have already started celebrating."

Surrey coach Steve Rixon denied that his side had underestimnated their opponents.

"We were outplayed in most areas of the game. They probably played as well as they can and we didn't bowl a consistent line."

The club has made a patchy start to the summer and he added: "The weather's been a bit inconsistent and we haven't responded particularly well - that's something we've got to address.

"It's still early in the season and we'll target the other competitions. But this is a very strong reality check for everyone concerned."
