Sangakkara made South Africa pay for their mistakes |
Graeme Smith believes dropped catches could cost South Africa dear in the second Test against Sri Lanka. "You can't afford to let chances like that go on such a good batting wicket," he said after Kumar Sangakkara hit 157
"I am also disappointed at the way we bowled but we did not miss an extra bowler as we had decided to go in with a compact bowling attack."
But Smith stayed optimistic, adding: "We can still come back in the match if we get some early wickets on Thursday."
Sangakkara shared a stand of 192 with Mahela Jayawardene, who made 82 before falling to Makhaya Ntini late in the day.
But the pair rode their luck after Jacques Kallis missed Sangakkara at slip on 57 and wicket-keeper Mark Boucher dropped Jayawardene on 16.
However, Smith showed his faith in his own batsmen, saying: "The pitch is perfect for batting and we too have a chance of getting a big score."
