We are about to fly to Dubai for the Six Nations tournament and the winner will play in the ICC Champions Trophy in September in England featuring all the Test nations, plus Kenya.
We are playing against some strong sides in Holland, Namibia and Canada and some more unknown quantities in the UAE and the USA but we go into the tournament full of confidence.
Certainly, we will be confident. I think we have a strong squad and if we play some decent cricket we have a great chance.
Normally we would have a couple of months off at this time of year but this time we have been training as a squad every Sunday since the turn of the year.
Dougie Brown brings plenty of big-match experience to bear |
We missed out on the World Cup last year which was really disappointing so this would be a great chance to get Scotland back on the international stage.
We would be in the same Champions Trophy group as Australia and New Zealand if we do win and so the chance to play against them is a tremendous carrot for us to do well in Dubai.
The financial benefits that come with qualification would be extremely valuable to us as well. With the grant from the England and Wales Cricket Board getting taken away there is a little bit of a hole in the budget to fill.
There are two experienced faces returning to Scottish ranks this year in the form of Gavin Hamilton and Dougie Brown.
I know Gavin well. I played under-19 cricket with him and it's fantastic to have him back on board.
He and Dougie have been with us in training for the last few weeks and it's great to see that wealth of experience both on and off the field.
Holland will be very difficult opponents. We play them on a regular basis and they tend to be a well-drilled, well-disciplined team.
They tend to have a set game-plan and a lot of experience so they know what they are trying to achieve with their cricket and tend to stick with it.
Namibia are a team we have not played for a couple of years and they are dangerous as well.
The Holland side will probably start as tournament favourites |
There are one or two talented players in there and they are extremely good in the field but we are quite fortunate to have Dougie on board because he coached them in the World Cup and has good first-hand knowledge of their squad.
The other factor with Dougie is that he has just been on an MCC tour to Dubai, playing against a UAE side, so he has some inside knowledge on them too.
But I am not too keen to concentrate too much on the opposition. We tend to focus on our own jobs and our own game.
When we get out to Dubai obviously it will be hot but we have a warm-up game and two to three days practice beforehand.
Ideally we would like to have two or three weeks out there before the series stuff starts but that's not possible.
So we just have to make the best of the warm-up opportunities that we have and back ourselves to do well in the tournament proper.
