Fast bowler Steve Harmison said he began to doubt he would be named in England's touring squad after "people had written nasty things" about him. The Durham man missed the tour to Sri Lanka with injury but was England's leading Test wicket-taker in 2003.
There were some allegations that he was not as much of a team-player as some of his colleagues.
But Harmison, speaking to BBC Look North, said: "I was confident if I was fit my ability would shine through."
England have not won a Test series in West Indies since 1968 and Harmison views them as tough opponents.
He said: "No matter where you go you are going to get tough competition and good games but hopefully we can come out of the tour with a victory.
"The West Indies are finding it hard in South Africa's back garden with Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis in form but they have got good competitors.
"Brian Lara is going to be a tough competitor for us."
Harmison's Durham colleague Paul Collingwood reckoned the Sri Lanka tour went well "on a personal note."
The novice Test batsman, who has more experience in one-day cricket, faces stiff competition from Nasser Hussain for a spot in the middle order.
Colllingwood said: "I will just carry on with what I am doing in the nets and work hard on all aspects of my game.
"I think there are going to be a lot of Englsih fans going over there to support us so I'm sure there will be a great atmosphere there.
"The wickets are usually quick and bouncy. I like the ball coming on the bat and hopefully it will work out well for me."
