India agree to Pakistan tour
A Test and one-day series for next year is on the table
India have agreed to tour Pakistan early next year but want the dates amended to allow more time to rest after their tour of Australia.

A spokesman for the Pakistan Cricket Board said: "The previous itinerary gives the Indian team a very brief break from the tour to Australia."

India have not played a Test match in Pakistan since the 1989-90 season.

Last Wednesday, the Indian government finally agreed it would accept regular tours between the two countries.

Sporting ties between India and Pakistan have a five-decade history of disruption.

The Indian government had long said its policy of disallowing national teams to play Pakistan would continue until cross-border violence in the Himalayan state of Kashmir ended.

The initial tour itinerary for what will be a historic series proposed three Tests and seven one-day internationals.

Now it just requires some fine tweaking. India return from Australia on 14 February and according to initial proposals, the tour to Pakistan would have begun just five days later.

No venues have been decided upon yet, although the troubled cities of Karachi and Peshawar, plus Quetta, where a new stadium has been built, are all possibles.

On their current tour, South Africa refused to play in Karachi, the scene of a number of recent bomb attacks.

They also steered clear of Peshawar, which is close to the Afghanistan border.

Since then, they have met at the Asia Cup in Bangladesh and the World Cup in South Africa.

Pakistan's three-Test tour of India in 1999 took place despite threats from Hindu fundamentalists.

The proposed tour will be discussed further at the International Cricket Council's executive board meeting in Barbados on 29 October.
