Lehmann is hopeful of playing in the second Test against Zimbabwe |
Darren Lehmann has been ruled out of Australia's second Test against Zimbabwe because of an inflamed Achilles tendon. The news is the latest in a series of injury problems for the hosts ahead of the match, starting in Sydney on Friday.
Pace bowlers Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie are both sidelined and leg-spinner Stuart MacGill is an injury doubt.
Lehmann does not have to undergo surgery but has been ordered to rest and will also miss the triangular one-day series in India which follows the Test.
"I'm really disappointed to be missing this match, but I'm realistic enough to know that I could suffer further damage if I do play," he said.
"My main focus right now is to try and get things right for good. "I did a lot of running during our break prior to the Perth Test and according to [ankle specialist] Dr Sullivan that's where I aggravated the Achilles."
Australia won last week's first Test in Perth by an innings and 175 runs.
Simon Katich is in the squad as cover for Lehmann, and would gain his second Test cap unless the home side opt to field a five-man attack.
Either Brad Williams or Nathan Bracken will win their first Test cap, while spinner Brad Hogg is also in reserve.
Zimbabwe seam bowler Doug Hondo is also hoping to play in Sydney after intensive treatment on a thigh injury.
He has managed only two overs so far on tour, but is now been cleared to bowl at full pace in the nets.
"We will obviously assess any reaction to bowling in the nets over the next 48 hours, which will determine if he will be available for selection on Friday," said team physio Bradley Robinson.
Young batsman Michael Clark will replace Lehmann in the one-day squad.
Gillespie has been selected for the India trip but must pass a fitness test on his calf injury before departure.
If he is ruled out, his place in the tournament, which also features India and New Zealand, will go to Williams.
The Australians will leave for India on 22 October.
