Vaughan and Flintoff shared a century stand |
Michael Vaughan hopes England's second consecutive NatWest Series victory will set them up for their fourth match against South Africa, in Saturday's final.
The home side took the tally against their fellow-finalists to 2-1 in the series so far with a four-wicket win, following Sunday's win over Zimbabwe.
"It's great to go into the final with the momentum of two wins behind us and if we can produce a similar performance on Saturday we should be OK," Vaughan said.
"To restrict South Africa to 198 was a tremendous effort."
Vaughan hit a career-best 83 - his first half-century in eight matches as captain to set up the victory and silence critics calling for a different batsman at three in the order.
"I've said for a while I felt pretty good and it was great to get a few runs and help the side to victory," he added.
We got off to a reasonable start but we didn't capitalise on it |
Andrew Flintoff took the man-of-the-match award after bludgeoning 54 in a century stand with his captain as well as taking three catches and a wicket with his bowling. But he believed Lancashire team-mate James Anderson deserved more of the plaudits after conceding 24 in his first two overs.
"It's nice to be voted for but the way Jimmy bowled coming back from his first over to take 4-38 was a fantastic performance," Flintoff said.
"The character he showed to come back after his first over went for 19 was awesome.
"And the way Vaughany played to get 80-odd at a tricky time - he batted superbly."
South Africa captain Graeme Smith said his side played well below their best.
The straight-talking Smith said: "I don't think you can just say we weren't good enough on the day - I think we played badly.
"We got off to a reasonable start but we didn't capitalise on it.
"A couple of good catches stuck for England and on another day they go for four.
"But we lacked a plan with our bowling.
"We've been so good in the last few games but today [Tuesday}, perhaps because we felt we needed a wicket every ball, we weren't patient enough.
"At 30 for three we needed to build pressure with Flintoff coming in and we weren't able to do that."
