One day victories do not come much more emphatic than this.
Trescothick was merciless |
England buried the memory of their disappointing defeat at Old Trafford by completely outplaying Pakistan, who failed to respond to a pre-match rallying call from their President, General Musharraf. The President visited the team just before play began, and urged them to "fight hard until the end".
As it turned out Pakistan were struggling from the very first ball of the match.
James Anderson, who enjoyed another unforgettable day, removed Imran Nazir lbw with that opening delivery and, for Pakistan, it was all downhill from there.
So lifeless was their performance that you barely heard the blast of a single horn from Pakistan's supporters.
Not only did wickets fall, but it was only when Yousuf Youhana was joined by Azhar Mahmood at 80-6 that the innings found some focus.
The pair ran brilliantly between the wickets to put on 72 in 12 overs before Azhar was beautifully caught by Vikram Solanki.
Abdul Razzaq scored 17, but when he was caught by Marcus Trescothick off Anderson, there was still a chance that Pakistan's tail could slog their way to 220.
However, this hope was snuffed out by Anderson who, first, had Shoaib Akhtar caught behind and then, to complete the first hat-trick by an Englishman in one day cricket, he splattered Mohammad Sami's stumps.
The force is with England for the final match in this mini-series |
We then witnessed an extraordinary innings by Trescothick. Facing the prospect of a furious onslaught from Shoaib and Sami, he launched a blistering attack, reaching 50 from only 37 balls as Solanki watched from the other end.
His contribution to the partnership of 109 was eight, but he cannot have failed to have learned a great deal.
Trescothick was merciless - my favourite shot was an uppercut for six off Shoaib - and 76 of his 86 came in boundaries.
When he fell to a top edged pull, the game was effectively over.
Michael Vaughan fell for 10 and James Troughton could only really fail in this situation - he fell for a duck.
But Andrew Flintoff, with a bruising 26 from 13 balls, saw England home with 28 overs still remaining.
They have the force with them for the final match in this mini-series at Lord's on Sunday.
