Vaughan remains positive

Michael Vaughan was philosophical after England lost their first one-day international under his captaincy.

And he said the level of intensity in the field was something his team would now have to replicate at every opportunity from now on.

England came back from the dead to provide a tense finish under the floodlights at Old Trafford.

But in the end it was a case of too little too as Abdul Razzaq and Mohammad Sami held their nerve to see the tourists home.

Vaughan said: "It was a fantastic game but after getting first use of that wicket we were probably 30 or 40 runs short.

"We showed some inexperience in the middle period but the character and fight in the field was fantastic. It set a benchmark - that's got to be the standard from now on.

My coach just told me to stay out there, wait for the bad ball
Mohammad Hafeez
Man of the match

"We fought all the way to the end but Pakistan were the better team on the night.

"Obviously having Goughie back on the field helps but they all showed character. James Anderson - to have to bowl his last five or six overs from one end at the death was tremendous.

"It was disappointing to lose but there were a lot of positives. We'll have a couple of meetings to discuss where we went wrong and try to put it right for Friday."

Winning Pakistani captain Rashid Latif said: "Credit goes to the young guns of Pakistan. We enjoy playing here - it's like playing at Lahore or Karachi.

"Last time we played a Test match here we won so we have good memories."

Man-of-the-match Mohammad Hafeez called the boisterous atmosphere - created by a persistent din of klaxons and drums - "wonderful."

The youngster added: "The support was with us. My coach just told me to stay out there, wait for the bad ball and then I would get plenty of runs."
