Hollioake is now better equipped for the job

The Surrey all-rounder lifted the Sharjah Trophy during his last stint as England one-day captain between 1997 and 1999.

And he appears to be in the frame to take over from Nasser Hussain who stepped down after the World Cup.

The England selectors are also thought to be considering Marcus Trescothick, Michael Vaughan, Paul Collingwood and Andrew Flintoff.

But Hollioake, who has led Surrey to three championship titles, believes he is even better equipped to take on the challenge following the death of his brother, Ben, last year.

"It's a tough job, but I would relish the captaincy. I don't know anyone who would turn down the chance to captain England. It's the ultimate job and I would jump at it," he told the Mail on Sunday.

"Ben's passing has made me a better person and a better player. When Ben went, I suddenly realised that getting a duck was not that important in the grand scale of life.

"I have a fearless attitude where the opposition finds it difficult to read my intentions. If the ball is there to be hit, I flog it.

"It's not suicidal: it's a calculating approach and hugely rewarding, allowing me to play with more freedom.

"I am more compassionate, less selfish and I value players' opinions more than perhaps I did. Above all, I want a chance to have some influence on a bright new era for English cricket."

Hollioake, 31, lost the England one-day captaincy early in 1999 when the selectors decided against having separate captains for one-dayers and Tests.

And he missed the cut for the World Cup squad despite being called up for the triangular series in Australia.

But during the tournament in South Africa Australia's Darren Lehmann told the BBC Sport website he believed Hollioake was the best man for the job.

"I think they should go for Hollioake because I believe he is the best captain by far in English county cricket," he said.

"The selectors may think the time is right to go for one of the youngsters in the side, say Michael Vaughan, but if they were looking for somebody who has a bit of experience then they must consider Hollioake."
