Former England one-day captain Adam Hollioake said he would jump at the chance to skipper his country again. Is he the right man for the job?
The Surrey all-rounder appears to be in the frame to take over from Nasser Hussain who stepped down after the World Cup. The England selectors are also thought to be considering Marcus Trescothick, Michael Vaughan, Paul Collingwood and Andrew Flintoff.
Who would you like to see take the job?

I think Michael Vaughan should be the next England captain because he has shown what he can do with the bat this summer in Test matches, so maybe he should be given the chance to see what he can do for England for the one-day internationals.
Ricky Clark, England
What a silly idea - he isn't a regular in the one-day team so logically shouldn't be considered as a potential captain.
Matthew Jones, UK
I suppose Hollioake will get it since we seem to be hell-bent on pursuing the suicidal notion that one-day cricket is different from Test cricket.
In fact, Hollioake is not good enough to play at the international level, as he has shown on his many trials. Nasser can't have it both ways - he either captains England or he doesn't.
I think that Flintoff should be given the nod Russ Sumpter, Czech Republic |
At the moment the one-day side is ruined by an imbecilic selection policy. It is Nasser's job to fight this and insist on his regular Test players. If he is so demoralised that he can't do this he should resign as captain altogether.
Tom, UK
I think that Flintoff should be given the nod - he proved to be a class one-day player in the World Cup and has immense pride in playing for England. Vaughan should be considered for the Test captaincy spot if Hussain resigned.
Russ Sumpter, Czech Republic
Hollioake certainly is an excellent tactician and motivator. However, one-day planning should be looking forward to the next World Cup in 2007.
Does Hollioake warrant a place in the side as another bits and pieces player, and will he be around in four years' time. Australia showed that bits and pieces don't work - just look at NZ and Sri Lanka!
Neil Picton, England
I believe that Darren Gough should be the new ODI captain of England cause he's got the fire and passion to lead England, and he has a secure place in the line-up.
Imran Yusuf, Karachi, Pakistan
Hollioake is the best 'English' captain around and a very useful one-day player, it was extraordinary that he wasn't at the World Cup.
Jonathan Eastwood, England
Hollioake may be a good captain but he is not good enough to play in an England shirt anymore only when we are short. The main reason for him not being captain is because we have two many all-rounders playing already and we need more specialist players.
Adam should spend more time in the nets practicing, rather than talking rubbish |
I know this is a mad idea but Graham Thorpe wants to come back and play for England. Well, give him the captaincy he probably will be there for the next World Cup, what a player he is, still the best England have.
Tim Woolf, England
Adam Hollioake, oh come on people, when did he last play for his country, let alone captain it! The captain is someone you'll want to play every game, and Adam really isn't that person.
The likes of Vaughan or Trescothick are much better choices. Adam should spend more time in the nets practicing, rather than talking rubbish to anyone who'll listen to him.
Ian S, Birmingham, UK
I don't suppose we could get the rules changed and offer Steve Waugh a run out for the England team - he is available for the one-day games.
David, Qatar
No way Hollioake, he can't even make the team. Ronnie Irani is as good a captain as he is and at least he is in the squad. You have to have some continuity.
Andrew Barton, England
Adam Hollioake is surely the candidate that the English selectors should look up to. Vaughan can be vice-captain for the time Hollioake is captain and learn so that two years down the line England do not have to go through the crisis they are going now.
Amit Shindore, India
England doesn't have anyone good enough to captain their side. Nasser was the best they had, they must now look to either Vaughan or Trescothick.
Ruwan Waranakalasuriya, Sri Lanka
I believe the selectors will go with Marcus Trescothick. He has plenty of experience but still enough years in him to be a much needed long term prospect.
Graham Gooch should captain England's one-day side |
It seems that a bit of grooming for the job has been going on for him and the ECB seem to be pretty predictable with their choices.
Joanne, New Zealand
There is no obvious candidate to take up the role at the moment. I don't think Vaughan is still ready to be England captain. Adam Hollioake is the man.
CV, Sri Lanka
I'd like Paul Collingwood to be given a go.He is our most improved player.we can build a team for the future around Collingwood, Flintoff and Anderson.
Dene MacGuinness, Northants England
Adam Hollioake is definitely the man to captain England's one-day side purely because he is the most experienced, having already captained England and Surrey.
Matt, England
Graham Gooch should captain England's one-day side, even at his age he far better than our main batsmen.
Scott Hance, UK
Hollioake is the right man for the job. He is a good tactician and it is a disgrace that he was not selected for the final 15 man party to represent England in the World Cup.
There are no other real contenders for the job; with previous experience he fits the criteria.
Matt K, England
Hollioake shouldn't be captain. He isn't good enough to make the side and he has made massive charity commitments for the coming year. The job should go to someone who is in the team and has the time to give it the attention and effort it warrants.
Andrew Barton, England, UK
Shouldn't we pick a captain who has at least been close to being selected for the team sometime in the last few years? |
Of course Hollioake should be captain. It is absolutely disgraceful that he was not in the team at the World Cup as I believe England would have had a chance to win with him there.
To win a World Cup you need people who can perform above the norm and Adam is one of those people certainly with the bat now and even at times with the ball.
Simon, Bangkok, Thailand
Adam Hollioake is clearly a good tactician and has proved to be good captain. However, because of his lack of cricketing skills at the highest level, could he be made a non-playing captain as we have in tennis?
Dr. Enoch, Cardiff, UK
Shouldn't we pick a captain who has at least been close to being selected for the team sometime in the last few years? Good captain, shame about everything else...
Adam, UK
The captaincy should not be given to one of England's most talent batsmen (Vaughan). England made that mistake with Atherton, it put pressure on him as a batsmen. The same happened to Stewart.
The captaincy should not be given to an immense talent, but instead a good all round player - Adam Hollioake.
Nimish, England
The captaincy should be given to Michael Vaughan |
Adam Hollioake is the right man for the job. He has done a wonderful job as a captain before and I think with such a variety of players in England team now, he will make the team one of the best!
Vishal, USA
Hollioake is the most obvious and in my opinion the only real choice. The most successful present county captain, and more importantly he has done the job as well as any recent England captain at the top level.
Kez, England
Hollioake will prove an excellent captain. He is very capable player and he has an ability to guide and play under pressure conditions.
Tom, USA
The captaincy should be given to Michael Vaughan as not only is he our best batsman but a more likely candidate to take over Hussain. So why not bring him now and give him that experience in this type of cricket to get him ready for next World Cup?
I can't see Hollioake being at next World Cup.
Emran Raja, London
Only one man is proven for the job and that is Adam Hollioake |
As good as a captain he is, Hollioake is not good enough as a player to represent England.
Ben Kay, UK
Offer the job to Andrew Symnods - he was born in England and has TALENT - something drastically lacking in the England team.
Obviously the residency rules will need to be changed - but give it a go!
Ken Bridge, Australia
Only one man is proven for the job and that is Adam Hollioake. The quicker he is made captain, the better.
Antony Cooper, London
Having watched him guide England to the Coca-Cola Cup in Sharjah back in 1998, I think Adam Hollioake is the only man for the job. The spirit of the team for that fortnight and the leadership he displayed showed he is well respected. He can play crucial roles in big matches too.
