Mahmud (right) takes over with the team at a low ebb |
All-rounder Khaled Mahmud has been named as Bangladesh's new captain. He takes over from wicket-keeper Khaled Mashud, who resigned following the team's poor performances at the recent World Cup.
Mahmud will take charge for the first time in next month's home one-day series against South Africa and India.
The South Africans, who also have a new captain in Graeme Smith, will then stay on for two Test matches.
Mahmud, 31, has a modest record at international level.
He has scored 503 runs and taken 37 wickets in 38 one-day appearances, and 65 runs and one wicket in three Tests.
Bangladesh are still seeking a new coach following the decision to end the contract of former Pakistani seam bowler Mohsin Kamal.
We have talented players and my first task will be to utilize our potential on the field |
Saber Hossein Chowdhury, president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board, told the BBC Sport website they hoped to make an appointment in the next few days.
Bangladesh have not won a one-day international since 1999 and lost five of their six World Cup games in South Africa.
The other, against West Indies, being abandoned because of rain.
They have not fared any better in Test cricket and are still awaiting their first win in the five-day game.
