Waugh is thinking over his future |
Adam Gilchrist has backed Ricky Ponting to become Australia's next Test captain. Ponting has led the one-day team for the past 12 months, winning 27 out of 34 games, with Steve Waugh continuing as skipper of the Test side.
Wicket-keeper Gilchrist is currently vice-captain to both men, and says he does not expect to make the step up when Waugh decides to retire from international cricket.
"Ricky is the main man in line, whether it is now or later. He's an outstanding captain," said Gilchrist.
"He's grown into the leadership role and he's obviously an option the selectors will have."
The selectors are due to name the squad for next month's tour of the West Indies following the Pura Cup final between Queensland and New South Wales.
Waugh is playing in the match for New South Wales and plans to announce whether he plans to continue his Test career at the end of the game.
He is still a very good captain and he has a lot to offer to the team |
Fast bowler Glenn McGrath has already urged Waugh to carry on in the job.
But Gilchrist said: "No-one's talked to Tugga (Waugh). But it's been discussed by the players here, not in a 'Come on, let us know' sort of way, but more like two guys sitting in a pub.
"It's a big decision either way."
Gilchrist has led the Test side on two occasions when Waugh was absent due to injury.
They beat West Indies by five wickets in Adelaide in December 2000, but his second taste of captaincy, eight months later, ended in a six-wicket defeat by England at Headingley.
