Tour deadline for Waugh
Steve Waugh
WAUGH'S RECORD AGAINST WEST INDIES
28 Tests
1966 runs (average 47.95)
6x100s, 9x50s
19 wickets (average 45.68)
18 catches
Australia Test captain Steve Waugh has been given until Sunday to tell the selectors whether he wants to go on the forthcoming tour to the West Indies.

The 37-year-old has been considering his future since leading the side to a 4-1 home win in the Ashes series against England.

He was discarded from the one-day side last year but answered critics who felt it was time to step down from the Test side as well with a century against England in Sydney.

The tour squad is due to be named after the Pura Cup final between New South Wales and Queensland, which begins in Brisbane on Friday.

Waugh will be playing for New South Wales and the selectors cannot finalise their plans until he informs them of his decision.

"It's funny in a way because I feel as if I don't have to make a decision because right now I'm still playing cricket," Waugh said.

"But I will make a decision before the end of the match.

"It feels nice in the way that people are so interested in what I am going to do, a lot of the supporters out there.

"But really there are bigger news stories out there and more important stories than whether I am going to play on or not."

Waugh has scored 10,031 Test runs, a total exceeded only by Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar.

He has been on three previous tours to the Caribbean - Australia losing 2-1 in 1991, winning by the same margin in 1995 and drawing 2-2 four years ago.

Waugh's team-mate Michael Clarks will have a chance to press his claims during the Pura Cup final, along with Queensland pair Martin Love and Ashley Noffke.
