| Wednesday, 4 December, 2002, 20:26 GMT Gibbs sees off Sri Lankans Fourth one-day international, Kimberley: South Africa (190-2) beat Sri Lanka (184 all out)
Herschelle Gibbs smashed a century as South Africa beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in Kimberley to clinch their one-day series. The hosts needed only 185 to win after bowling Sri Lanka out cheaply, and they romped home with 19.1 overs spare. Opener Gibbs made an unbeaten 108, ending proceedings with a massive six - his third of the match - off Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya. Jacques Kallis provided admirable support to finish on 64 not out, sharing in an unbroken stand of 172. Chaminda Vaas gave Sri Lanka hope when he trapped opener Andrew Hall lbw for two, and Neil McKenzie also went cheaply when he went caught behind off Pulasthi Gunaratne. Crashed Gibbs then took control in a 90-ball innings which contained 14 fours and brought him his 11th one-day international ton. Earlier, Sri Lanka had crashed to 184 all out from 47.3 overs, after Marvan Atapattu's bizarre run out sparked a mini-collapse as four wickets fell for 20 runs. Russel Arnold's half-century lower down the order made the score look respectable, while Atapattu's 39 was the next best score. Veteran bowler Allan Donald took three for 18 - and captain Shaun Pollock grabbed three for 40.
