South Africa retain their grip
Jacques Kallis goes for a big shot
Kallis continued the punishment for Bangladesh
1st Test, East London, day two, stumps: South Africa 529-4d; Bangladesh 153-7

Bangladesh will probably be asked to follow on some time before lunch on Sunday after South Africa continued to dominate the first ever Test to be held at Buffalo Park.

The contest between the second best Test side and the weakest at this level was always likely to be a one-sided affair.

And after an unbeaten 75 from Jacques Kallis allowed South Africa to declare in the middle of the second day, Bangladesh lost seven wickets before stumps.

Makhaya Ntini, oddly only the fourth bowler used, ended Saturday's action with figures of three for 13 from 10 hostile overs.

Place in history

Kallis became only the fifth man in Test cricket history to reach the double of 4,000 runs and 100 wickets.

Martin van Jaarsveld overcame a tentative start on his Test debut to finish unbeaten on 39 when skipper Mark Boucher decided to call it a day.

Kallis and van Jaarsveld had by then put on an unbeaten partnership of 81 for the fifth wicket.

Boucher decided to open his attack with David Terbrugge and Nantie Hayward and they struggled early on before making the breakthrough in the seventh over.

Terbrugge trapped Javed Omar lbw with the score on 21 and three overs later, with only four more runs on the board, Al Sahariar played on to Hayward.

Attacking fields

After that, slack bowling and fielding allowed Bangladesh to gain some momentum, as they took advantage of Boucher's attacking fields.

Both Terbrugge and Hayward bowled too short at times.

And it was only when Boucher finally turned to Ntini that things started happening.

The right-arm quick removed numbers three, four and five in the Bangladeshi batting line-up with little fuss.

Hayward then dismissed skipper Khaled Mashud cheaply before Claude Henderson's slow left-arm finally accounted for the brave Alok.

Bashar top-scores

Kapali skied an edge to Kallis at slip shortly before stumps to be out for 35, three runs fewer than the score made by Bangladesh's top scorer, Habibul Bashar.

Play began on Saturday with Gary Kirsten on 113 and Kallis, having just started his innings, on one.

Kirsten moved to 150 before being caught at backward point attempting an ambitious back-foot drive while Ashwell Prince made just two before falling in similar fashion.

Right-arm seamer Talha Jubair grabbed both wickets.
