Folwell's Delhi haul means he has six Commonwealth medals in total |
Cambridgeshire gymnast Luke Folwell is intent on turning his five-medal haul in Delhi into an 2012 Olympics call-up. Folwell, 23, earned gold in the all-round event and the vault, plus three silvers at the Commonwealth Games. He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire his performance takes him a step closer to representing Great Britain in London. "I started at a very young age and it's not finished yet, I've still got two hard years to push and I hope I get selected for the Olympics," he said. "They say the Commonwealth Games is the second biggest games behind the Olympics. "So it's good preparation for two years' time in London 2012 and hopefully I can repeat some of the success." | I've still got my Bundesliga Championships and then the British Championships, so there's no rest for the wicked |
The Huntingdon Olympic Gymnastic Club product has toiled in the shadow of team-mates Louis Smith and Daniel Keatings in recent years. But with the pair absent in India, Folwell was able to announce himself on the international scene, collecting silver in the team, rings and parallel bars events. "I had ambitions to go out there and perform routines to the best of my ability and I knew I had the potential," he said. "But turning potential into golds and silvers is something else." Despite his exploits Folwell is already back in training ahead of the British Championships on 5 November. "I've got my Bundesliga Championships where I go out to Germany and compete for a team," he continued. "And then the British Championships, so there's no rest for the wicked."
