England seal gymnastics one-two

England's Luke Folwell took gold ahead of team-mate Reiss Beckford in the men's individual all-around gymnastics final at the Commonwealth Games.

Cambridgeshire's Folwell took the lead with two rotations left and, despite a strong showing from Beckford on the bar, held on to win by 0.100 points.

The 23-year-old was a bronze medallist in Melbourne four years ago.

Joshua Jefferis, part of the Australian quartet that beat Folwell and Enfield's Beckford in the team event, came third.

"The difference between me and Reiss was the tiniest margin, perhaps just a little step on a dismount. I'm just delighted we came out with these medals," said Folwell.

A handspring double front on the vault, on which he scored 16.200, was the decisive moment for Folwell as he edged into a lead he refused to surrender.

He ended the competition on 85.550 points while 18-year-old Beckford's 85.450 was comfortably enough to add Commonwealth silver to the Youth Olympic silver he won in 2009.

Jefferis finished adrift of the duo on 84.750, narrowly denying England a one-two-three as Max Whitlock finished fourth with a score of 84.450.

England's best gymnasts have missed Delhi to concentrate on the World Championships which begin in Rotterdam on 16 October.

Folwell insisted that his gold went a fair way to making up for not being in the first-choice squad.

"I am a reserve for the Worlds, but I was very grateful to get the chance to come here, and winning a Commonwealth gold means I have realised one of my dreams," he said.
