Synchronised swimmer Lauren Smith took Scotland's medal tally to six in Delhi with a bronze in the solo event at her first Commonwealth Games.

"My focus this year was to get the bronze medal. It's been a real fight. I can't quite believe I've got it, so I'm really excited," said the 27-year-old.

The bronze medal is Scotland's first in the sport in any Commonwealth Games.

Canada's Marie-Pier Boudreau-Gagnon successfully defended her title while Jenna Randall won a silver for England.

Smith, who was born in Surrey, was a reserve for England at the Games in Melbourne and is now captain of the Team GB squad.

She had been lying in third place in the qualifying technical routine and held on to clinch a podium finish.

"It was really tense. I was watching the display board at the end and I was so nervous, I was shaking so much, but I managed to hold on," said Smith, whose father is from Glasgow.

"There have been a few tears. I'm sure it's going to settle in later on."

The Scots have now won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals.

Within 90 minutes of winning gold, Boudreau-Gagnon added a second when she and partner Chloe Isaac won in the duet category.
