Many of the top track cyclists from the home nations are missing the Commonwealth Games in order to prepare for next month's European Championships, a qualifying event for the London 2012 Olympics. With Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton absent, who will get a chance to fill their shoes? BBC Sport's TV team pick their ones to watch. ____________________________________________________________________ Jill Douglas, Trackside reporter Obviously some of the big names that everyone will recognise are not here but there are some young riders we will see in years to come, if not at London 2012 then in Glasgow in 2014 or 2016 in Rio. Looking at the Scotland team, Ross Edgar got a keirin silver medal in the Olympic Games and is a key member of the GB sprint team over the last few years. He learned to sprint with Victoria Pendleton and he's quite similar - not very big but with lots of power and he's very brave. He is a keen keirin rider but he really needs to step up because he is by far the most experienced of all the home nations sprinters here. The other Scottish rider I'm particularly keen to see is John Paul. I saw him perform in Newport a couple of years ago in the UK School Games. He's a young talent who will take part in the team sprint. He lives in England but has Scottish ancestry. ____________________________________________________________________ Hugh Porter, BBC commentator, four-time world champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 1966. I don't think Northern Ireland have ever won a medal in the women's track competition but Wendy Houvenaghal looks almost certain to in the women's individual pursuit. Houvenaghal won Olympic 3,000m pursuit silver in Beijing |
She always seems to come second, as she did behind Rebecca Romero in the Olympics, but she could go one better here, depending on the strength of Australia and New Zealand. Becky James from Wales is a junior world champion sprinter with immense talent. She is slightly overshadowed by Victoria Pendleton but she is maturing. ____________________________________________________________________ Chris Boardman, BBC summariser, former world and Olympic champion David Daniell is always the sprinter in waiting, always third or fourth in the rankings. He can ride a really good 1km time trial and could stand out here. Storey has won Paralympics medals in swimming and cycling |
Anna Blythe is a former sprinter who has converted to distance events so she will be interesting to watch in the points race. And Paralympian Sarah Storey has been going so quickly that she is vying for a place in the Great Britain able-bodied pursuit team. It's only her standing start that is stopping her from being in the first-choice line-up so she has a point to prove here and be really motivated, while some riders are just finishing off their seasons.
