Josh Green in action against number one seed Lee Chong Wei |
The Manx badminton team were the first Isle of Man athletes to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Monday. The squad faced the toughest of openings with a match against world champions Malaysia at the Badminton complex at Siri Fort. Despite some fine performances the Manx side were whitewashed 5-0. Team manager Geoff Clague said: "If we had to play the best team in the tournament, then it's best to get them out of the way first." He added: "The whole team played well and Josh [Green] played exceptionally." Green, who is the reigning UK Under-19 champion, gave the performance of the day against men's number-one seed Chong Wei Lee. The 18-year-old was beaten 2-0 but took 22 points in his 21-16, 21-6 defeat. Green said: "That's the first time I've played a player in the world top ten and I really enjoyed it. "The team is really upbeat now for the against Nigeria."
