Josh Green in action against number one seed Lee Chong Wei

The Manx badminton team were the first Isle of Man athletes to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi on Monday.

The squad faced the toughest of openings with a match against world champions Malaysia at the Badminton complex at Siri Fort.

Despite some fine performances the Manx side were whitewashed 5-0.

Team manager Geoff Clague said: "If we had to play the best team in the tournament, then it's best to get them out of the way first."

He added: "The whole team played well and Josh [Green] played exceptionally."

Green, who is the reigning UK Under-19 champion, gave the performance of the day against men's number-one seed Chong Wei Lee.

The 18-year-old was beaten 2-0 but took 22 points in his 21-16, 21-6 defeat.

Green said: "That's the first time I've played a player in the world top ten and I really enjoyed it.

"The team is really upbeat now for the against Nigeria."
