Sycerika McMahon won bronze at this year's European Junior Championships |
Portaferry schoolgirl Sycerika McMahon has narrowly missed out on a place in the 50m breaststroke final. The 15-year-old's time of 32.45 in the semis was just short of the top eight. Bethany Carson was fourth in her 50m butterfly heat to make the semis but Melanie Nocher and Claire Dawson failed to progress in the 200m freestyle. The NI men's 4x100m relay team made the final after qualifying in seventh place while Claire Black and Tony Stephenson lost their badminton singles matches. McMahon finished third in her heat in 32.30 to qualify for the semi-finals. Carson's 28.90 left her 14th overall in the 50m butterfly heats but she could only manage a sixth place finish in her 200m individual medley (2.21.89). Nocher finished fourth in her heat in a personal best of 2.01.57, just one place ahead of team-mate Clare Dawson (2.02.39). The relay team reached the final after running 3.28.62 minutes. Meanwhile, wrestler Mark Montgomery spoke of his pride after carrying the Northern Ireland flag at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Delhi. "The ceremony was amazing, like nothing I had seen before," said Montgomery.
