James Willstrop is hoping to secure a medal in Delhi |
England's squash team say their Commonwealth Games facilities in Delhi are world class, one of the player's coaches has revealed. The standards of the athletes village and venues in Delhi have come in for major criticism. But Malcolm Willstrop, father and coach of squash player, James, told BBC Radio Leeds: "I received information saying the facilities are great. "The England coaches out there say the show court is the best they've seen." Willstrop added: "David Campion [national coach] said the show court is a 3,000 seater stadium and that the other 10 courts there are the same standard as Manchester - our national headquarters. "He also said accommodation and food are great, so the players will be very happy here. "So it appears there has been some distortion in the media because clearly there are some very good facilities in Delhi." Pontefract's James Willstrop claimed silver in the 2006 Commonwealth's in Melbourne and will be hoping for further success this year, after deciding to head to India despite the concerns with the Games' venues. "James is his own man and he makes his own decisions. If he'd had any misgivings I think he would have voiced them and not gone," his father added. "Obviously he is my son and you are always concerned when they go away, but that's the same for any parent anywhere. "Of all the squash players I've dealt with in the build-up to the these Games, from the likes of New Zealand, Malaysia and England, none have ever expressed any doubt or fears about going. "So there's never been a problem from squash's point of view."
