King was 2009 World MatchPlay champion |
Norfolk's former World Indoor Bowls champion Mervyn King has admitted he has reservations about heading out to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games. Reports of poor conditions in the competitors' village has rocked preparations for the event. King told BBC Radio Norfolk: "I don't think there's any air-conditioning, the plumbing and electricity's not working. "To be fair I probably wouldn't want to go as it is at the moment, all I can do is look at my inbox and the news." He added: "It's supposed to be some of the best accommodation for the athletes there's ever been, so it just seems quite strange why it's all happened." The 44-year-old, who has represented England at the last two Commonwealth Games, is currently in Cyprus competing in this year's Premier League Bowls tournament. "I've had an email from our co-ordinator John Bell which said one or two things that were going on and that he'll keep us updated," he added. | Everyone's playing fairly well, the conditions are really hot, it's baking here, it's like being in Norfolk really |
"The rest of the team are going out to Delhi tomorrow, I think the bowls team are the first to actually get to Delhi, I shan't be going until Sunday but fingers crossed it will be OK." King, who won the 2006 indoor world title, is leading the way in Cyprus, taking his record to three wins out of four with victory over Cambridgeshire's Greg Harlow. Should King stay top of the table he will go automatically into Thursday's final. "If you stay in the top four you have a chance of getting into the final," he said. "It's all to play for, everyone's playing fairly well, the conditions are really hot, it's baking here, it's like being in Norfolk really."
