Gilroy was in superb form throughout the Melbourne event |
England's Sue Gilroy successfully retained her women's table tennis wheelchair singles Commonwealth title after an impressive victory. The Barnsley schoolteacher defeated Nigeria's Faith Obiora 11-9 9-11 11-6 11-9 to win gold.
"I can't believe I have now won two gold medals and only dropped one game each time," Gilroy told BBC Sport.
Her team-mate Cathy Mitton from Leeds won bronze after a 15-13 11-8 11-6 win over Nigerian Vivian Ozurumba.
Gilroy added: "It's very difficult to describe how I feel, I'm just ecstatic," she said. "This makes all the hard work worthwhile.
"There were so many expectation coming into the game that it's been quite stressful and I've felt a lot of pressure..
"It's great that I've had my family out here. I only wish my father could have been here, but he is seriously ill at home. He got me into table tennis and has been my inspiration."
Mitton was happy to add Commonwealth bronze to the bronze medal she won at the Athens Paralympics.
"It's great to win today, but I'm still disappointed I didn't get silver as I had match point in my semi-final," she said.
"But I'm pleased to get a medal. I've played my last three matches against more mobile opponents, so I deserve a medal."
