England's women's hockey team won bronze in Melbourne |
England goalkeeper Carolyn Reid saved two New Zealand shots in the penalty shoot-out to lead her team to hockey bronze in the Commonwealth Games. England won the tie-breaker 3-1 after a goalless 15 minutes of sudden-death extra time following a 0-0 stalemate.
Lisa Wooding missed the first shot for England as NZ scored but the Kiwis missed their next three shots before Chloe Rogers sealed the English win.
Later, Australia beat India 1-0 to claim the gold medal.
Australia captain Nikki Hudson scored eight minutes from time to condemn the defending champions to silver.
England and New Zealand were deadlocked in regulation play despite several chances each as England had one penalty corner against New Zealand's three.
But keeper Reid was just happy England finished the tournament with a medal.
"Personally I'm delighted, but we had to get there as a team and we came through," said the 33-year-old.
"We didn't panic in extra-time and we had some really good chances but they didn't go in and we just kept being positive.
"For me, I just think the pressure is on the stroke taker rather than the goalie so I think if I get one or two saves out of five then I've done a really good job.
"I've been in the squad since I was 19 and this is as sweet as any victory I've had.
"We had two silvers in the last two Commonwealths so we're delighted to go out with a win and a medal."
England captain Kate Walsh added: "It was a little bit cat and mouse but with Carolyn in goal we knew we were going to save a couple so we just had to put ours away.
"Penalties aren't the best way to settle a match but we have got a medal round our necks so I don't care now."
England coach Danny Kerry said: "We've had to play two sides ranked above us in the world and we've deserved our win.
"We had two gilt-edged chances which we really should have put away but all in all its been a fantastic day. We wanted to reach the final but we didn't perform when it mattered but we have the bronze."
