England diver Tony Ally finished a disappointing sixth in the 3m springboard competition in Melbourne. Ally, who carried the team flag at the opening ceremony, failed to emulate the silver he won in Manchester 2002 after a series of low-scoring dives.
The Sheffield athlete said. "My preparation has been excellent but I made too many mistakes and need to put it right before the synchro.
"My back has been tight and I've had treatment to make sure I'm ready."
He finished on 735 points while Ben Swain, also from Sheffield, finished seventh on 705.80 and Gary Hunt, of Southampton, 10th on 614.20.
Canada's world champion Alexandre Despatie added the crown to his gold in the one metre event to match his double in Manchester four years ago.
Australia's Robert Newbery was second and compatriot Steven Barnett third.
Australia's Loudy Tourky snatched gold with the very last dive to retain her women's 10 metres platform title.
Olympic champion and Tourky's synchro partner Chantelle Newbery claimed the silver and Canada's Emilie Heymans took the bronze.
It was Tourky's second gold of the Games after she won the 10m synchronised platform with Newbery.
Plymouth's Tonia Couch, 16, finished seventh with 611.65, one ahead of Southampton's Stacie Poiwell and three ahead of Sarah Barrow, also of Plymouth.
