Rhys Williams set a personal best and broke the Welsh record in finishing fourth in 49.09s at the 400m hurdles.

South African Louis Van Zyl won the race in a new Games record of 48.05s, Alwyn Myburgh and Kemel Thompson filling the remaining medal spots.

"I would have loved to get a medal but I am really pleased with that. I have loved being here," said Williams, 22.

The young Welshman also impressed Chris Rawlinson, who finished a disappointing last in his final race in the event.

"I have trained with Rhys for the last couple of years and he is a great athlete," said the 2002 champion.

"He has proved he is a championship performer and good luck to him."
