Northern Ireland shooter David Calvert has missed out on a Commonwealth Games medal for the first time since the 1990 championships in Auckland.

Calvert finished eighth in the individual full bore rifle event in Melbourne on Friday while Martin Millar was in 18th place.

"I'm disappointed not to get a medal but sport is like that - particularly shooting," Calvert told BBC Sport.

Calvert says he is hopeful of competing at the 2010 games in Delhi.

"Sometimes you can perform well just as well and miss out on the medals."

"In the eight games I've been to, there has been three when I haven't won a medal and I'm happy enough with the record.

"I'd hate to give up and I'd like to go to Delhi and beyond - wherever that may be."
