Phelps follows David Davies and Michaela Breeze as a Welsh gold medallist |
Wales' David Phelps and Scotland's Sheena Sharp both won gold and Northern Ireland's David Beattie took silver in a good day of shooting for Britain. Phelps won Wales' third gold of the Games in the men's 50m rifle prone, with England's Mike Babb taking silver.
Sharp took her second gold of the Games in the women's 50m rifle prone ahead of Wales' Johanne Brekke who took bronze.
Beattie clinched Northern Ireland's second medal of the Games after a shoot-off in the men's trap.
Beattie, in his first Commonwealth Games, was tied on 138 points with New Zealand's Graeme Ede and India's Manavjit Singh Sandhu at the end of the event but it was Ede who emerged with the gold medal.
"I had a chance to win the gold but hopefully this medal will give a big boost to the Northern Ireland team.
"I felt under a bit of pressure in the pairs event last week but managed to get my head together again," said the 52-year-old. Scotland's Ossie McLean and Edward Ling of England finished in joint fourth.
England's Mick Gault could not add to his medal haul, coming fifth in the 10m air pistol final.
"It is a fruition of a lot of hard work and dedication, not only from myself but from my friends and family," said Phelps, who had already claimed a bronze in the men's 50m rifle prone pairs alongside Griff Morgan.
"I would like to thank everyone who has made it possible for us to get here and if it was not for Team Wales greasing the wheel, this sort of thing would not be able to happen."
Babb, 43, was able to match the silver he won in the 50m rifle prone in Manchester but was not completely happy with the result. "To win any medal is special, without a doubt," he said.
"My emotions are a bit mixed, I am disappointed because I came here for gold, but I didn't have a good preliminary round.
"To come from fifth to silver in the finals is as much as I could hope for."
