Dobriskey wants to emulate Holmes during her career |
Lisa Dobriskey credited double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes for her Commonwealth gold medal in the 1500m. The 22-year-old defied expectations and shaved nearly two seconds off her personal best to secure her victory.
She told BBC Sport: "For one Kelly's a Kent girl like me and secondly she was watching in the stands tonight so it was a double inspiration for me.
"But to start comparing me to her is ridiculous - she's a double Olympic champion and a legend - I've won this."
Dobriskey revealed she had only spoken to Holmes "a couple of times" in the build-up to the Games.
But she added: "I'm going to make sure to talk to her tonight - especially with a gold medal round my neck."
The European under-23 silver medallist, who is ranked a lowly 40th in the world, said the future remained bright in British middle-distance running despite Holmes' retirement.
 | If we can come even remotely close to achieving what Kelly has done that would be great |
"There's a lot of us young ones coming through now," she added, "and if we can come even remotely close to achieving what Kelly has done that would be great."
Dobriskey watched Holmes win the 1500m Commonwealth title in Manchester four years ago and decided "I want some of that".
But she added: "I knew I had a chance to do well but never in a million years thought I'd win the gold. I'm absolutely gobsmacked.
"My mum will have had a heart attack watching at home."
Holmes was impressed with Dobriskey's efforts |
Holmes praised Dobriskey's efforts and told BBC Sport: "How fantastic was that?
"She was so shocked at the end to have won it but she has capabilities and is always up there with Hayley Tullett and Helen Clitheroe.
"I don't think anyone would have expected her to come through as strongly as she did it and was an amazing run.
"She was in the right place and was so strong at the end."
