Smith's older brother Paul claimed Commonwealth silver in Manchester |
English featherweight Stephen Smith booked his place in the Commonwealth Games boxing quarter-finals and then set his sights on the gold medal. The 20-year-old beat Ghana's Samuel Neequaye after landing a big left hand in the third round and securing victory on the outclassed rule.
Smith said: "I would love to take home the gold for the bragging rights."
Smith's team-mate, bantamweight Nick Macdonald, lost 19-11 to South African Bongani Mahlangu.
Macdonald, whose Games build-up was ruined by illness, led by one point after the first round but looked increasingly sluggish as his opponent pulled away.
"I've had flu and a chest infection so I haven't been able to have any fights for three months," Macdonald said.
"But I didn't perform as well as I should have done."
Darren Edwards secured a fourth quarter-final place for Wales with an emphatic 33-22 points win over Botswana's Thato Batshegi.
Edwards stormed ahead in an impressive second round and landed a flurry of big right hands before wrapping up the contest.
Edwards, who was beaten in the second round in Manchester four years ago, said: "This is my goal because the Olympics are a bit too far away for me now.
"I am feeling strong and picking my punches well."
Welsh bantamweight Matthew Edmonds beat Isho Shiba of Canada 26-21 to also reach the quarters.
Northern Ireland middleweight Eamonn O'Kane suffered a bad cut under one eye but still reached the next stage with a 25-16 win over Jobette Jean of the Seychelles.
O'Kane started well and gave his opponent a standing count in round two but walked into a big right hand in the third which caused the cut.
It required him to rush off for treatment straight after the fight had been won.
