England's gymnasts held off Canada's challenge in Melbourne |
England overcame the loss of captain Beth Tweddle to win silver in the women's team gymnastics in Melbourne. The team of Shavahn Church, Imogen Cairns, Becky Downie and Hannah Clowes finished on 164.350 points to claim second behind winners Australia.
England started badly after a shaky start in the beam but they recovered and a 14.7 score in the uneven bars from Church was enough for silver.
Australia finished well clear with a total of 172.6 while Canada won bronze.
Tweddle, who claimed a gold and two silvers in Manchester four years ago, pulled out of the Games this week after injuring her ankle in training.
And the 20-year-old joined her team-mates on the podium as they collected their medals.
