Cullen secured the first of two cycling bronzes for Scotland

Cullen claimed third behind reigning champion Katherine Bates in first and another Australian, Rochelle Gilmore.

Edgar was elevated to third following the disqualification of Australia's Ben Kersten, who had taken keirin silver.

Welshman Geraint Thomas won bronze in the men's points race behind Aussie Sean Finning and Kiwi Hayden Roulston.

Finning's victory completed an Australian clean sweep of the evening's gold medals at the Melbourne Park velodrome.

In the men's keirin, Kersten was judged to have illegally crossed into the lane of fellow Australian rider Shane Kelly.

Canadian Travis Smith was handed silver behind winner Ryan Bayley of Australia.

Afterwards Edgar told the BBC he was delighted to get the bronze, but sad for Kersten.

"It's good for me but I feel bad for the person who gets relegated.

"It got a bit rough on the home straight but I just had to carry it all the way to the line. It worked out okay, I got third place and I am really happy."

Welsh coach Julian Winn stated he was delighted with Geraint Thomas' bronze medal.

"I am so pleased for Geraint. Following his injuries last year this is a wonderful return to Australia for him. He showed today what a great talent he is."

"Both Matt Brammeier and Ross Sander rode great races to help and assist Geraint in winning this medal - this was a great team effort by the Welsh lads."

Welsh Cycling president Mr Bill Owen sent his congratulations to Thomas.

"Geraint is a wonderful ambassador for Welsh Cycling and this is a great achievement for him," he said.
