Neave adds bronze to medal haul

Neave added individual bronze to a gold in the team event

Lizzie Neave's bronze in the women's K1 Kayak final helped Great Britain to its best display since 1983 at the World Slalom Canoeing Championship in Spain.

It was a second medal in as many days for Neave, who won gold in the team event on Saturday, making a total of four medals in all for the team.

In the men's C2 double, Etienne Stott and Timothy Baillie just missed out on another medal, coming fourth.

And David Florence was also unlucky in the men's C1 final, coming fifth.

Racing on the 1992 Olympic course near Barcelona, Neave had her work cut out as she competed against the likes of Slovakia's double Olympic champion Elena Kaliska, former world champion Jana Dukatova and Austria's Olympic bronze medal winner Violetta Oblinger Peters.

Having eased through to the final as the fifth fastest of 10 qualifiers, Neave recorded a time of 109.04 seconds, and had to sit and watch as the rest of the field went out.

But despite some of the former champions on display, it was Germany's Jasmin Schornberg and Maialen Chourraut of Spain who ended up in the first two places.

However, the 22-year-old from Staffordshire was delighted to win a medal, saying: "I'm absolutely delighted.

"This has really finished off a good season and championships."
