Laura Blakeman, Louise Donington and Lizzie Neave were victorious for GB |
Laura Blakeman, Louise Donington and Lizzie Neave saw off Slovakia to win the women's K1 team gold at the Canoe Slalom World Championships in Spain. The team finished 5.35 seconds ahead of their rivals on a good day for Team GB. "A second gold this year confirms our position. Following gold at the Europeans it shows that it wasn't just a one off," Blakeman said. The men's K1 kayak team took silver and the men's C2 won bronze - repeating their European Championships result. In the men's K1 (kayak single), the team of Olympic silver medallist and 2008 European champion Campbell Walsh, Richard Hounslow and Huw Swetnam won silver in a time of 99.46 seconds. But Olympic silver medallist and 2009 World Cup winner David Florence could only manage 12th with team-mates Dan Goddard and Mark Proctor after they picked up a 50-second penalty for missing a gate and a two-second penalty for touching another in the men's C1 event. The championships are being held on the Barcelona Olympics 1992 white water course, with more than 60 nations taking part. Sunday sees the focus switch to individual events with competitors, including Florence, Walsh, Swetnam, Neave and Donington, looking to qualify for their respective finals.
