Frank Warren hints at Liam Walsh homecoming

Promoter Frank Warren is hopeful Liam Walsh will be able to defend his newly-won Commonwealth super-featherweight crown in his home county of Norfolk.

After defeating Ghanaian Maxwell Awuku on Saturday the 24-year-old said he would like "a defence of the title in Norwich please, Mr Warren".

And it would seem the Cromer boxer will have his request fulfilled.

"The next one won't be in Norfolk but I think the one after that will," Warren told BBC Radio Norfolk.

Walsh, who is undefeated in his 10 professional fights, overcame Awuku at the top of a card in Bethnal Green, that also saw victories for twin brother Ryan (featherweight) and elder sibling Michael (super-bantamweight).

Warren revealed that any homecoming would be a family affair.

"If it comes off we'll certainly be doing something with them around the end of February, early March," he added.

"Saturday was a great night for the Walsh family and Liam really came through with flying colours.

"To be stepping up for a fight at a title after 10 fights, especially in a 12-round fight after not going further than six, is a bit of a feat."

Warren, who has guided the careers of Ricky Hatton, Joe Calzaghe and Naseem Hamed, believes Walsh can go on to draw in the crowds and further titles.

"I'm sure that fight's going to bring him on even more and I do believe he has the ability to go all the way, as do his two brothers," Warren said.

"They understand if you bring people along, sell tickets and create an atmosphere, that normally translates into good fights as far as the TV is concerned.

"That will only grow, it seems every time the boys' fight, more and more people come along."
