Flournoy was making a return to boxing following a two-year break

Birkenhead fighter Brett Flournoy says he will learn to be less eager in the future after coming runner-up in the Prizefighter competition on Friday.

The 30-year-old welterweight was beaten by Prince Arron in the final.

"I went out there and tried to force the issue but I should have just stuck to what I was doing," Flournoy told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"I hadn't dived in once through the whole fight. It was just a mistake really and one I'll learn from."

"I just got over eager I think," he added. "Carl in my corner was saying 'Go out there and have a big round' which, in hindsight, may have been a mistake.

"Then just in the last round when he was getting a little more desperate, I got a bit stupid and make a silly mistake and started jumping in."

In the last round, the fighter was knocked onto one knee and he stayed in that position, which led to him losing the contest and the competition.

"People say when you get knocked down, take the eight count," he continued.

"I fell onto one knee but because my head was down I didn't know whether I was leant on, pushed or whether it was a punch that knocked me over.

"I'd been hit a couple of times before hand, but because I've never been knocked down before I just stayed on one knee.

"It was a silly mistake and I really should have just jumped up and challenged. I've learned from it now and I will do in the future.

"I've found my love for boxing again," said Flournoy. "I'm going to stay in gym now and keep training I've got an eight round fight in a few weeks time maybe.

"Then in the summer [I'll have] a title eliminator or a title shot of some sort."
