Gary Buckland has just one loss, on points, in his 19-fight, five-year career
Newport prospect Gary Buckland remains on course for glory after inflicting a first defeat on Sam Rukundo. Rukundo twice failed to make weight for the Commonwealth lightweight title decider at Stoke's Fenton Manor. But after finally beating the scales the tough Swedish-based Ugandan took the 23-year-old Welshman all the way. Buckland dropped his man in the first. The Ugandan fought back cagily to make it a gruelling and exciting fight, but he dropped a unanimous verdict. The Welshman, who has just one loss, on points, in his 19-fight, five-year career was scored a 117-111, 117-111, 116-112 victor. | 606: DEBATE |
"[Rukundo] wasn't warmed up in the first, but he was the first southpaw I've faced," said Buckland. "That was awkward and I had to adjust my style. "I'll fight [Commonwealth champion] Lee McAllister wherever the purse bids go, if it's in Aberdeen or in my hometown, Newport."
