McAllister (left) was a unanimous points winner in Glasgow |
Aberdeen lightweight Lee McAllister successfully defended his Commonwealth title against Samuel Amoako in Glasgow. The home fighter was on top for the first six rounds despite a tentative approach but the Ghanaian challenger had the best of the next four. McAllister held on in a less than thrilling contest and took control again in the final two rounds. The judges' verdict was 117-112, 117-112 and 116-112 taking McAllister's career record to 31 wins, two losses. The bout at the Bellahouston Leisure Centre was the first headlined by an Aberdonian in the west of Scotland and there was a strong contingent of fans down from the Granite city to cheer their man on. However, for the most part, it was a tame performance from the champion nicknamed 'The Aberdeen Assassin'. The 27-year-old performed only in short bursts for most of the fight which saw him do enough to close out the fight, without any fireworks. A flurry midway through round three had the crowd excited for the first time and there was another big roar when Amoako was on the receiving end of a good right in the fifth. There was a minor scare for the Scot when a small nick appeared to open up a the corner of his eye at the start of the seventh round. But the wild flailing of the challenger was never likely to trouble McAllister, who did enough to stay out of trouble and then see it home against a tiring and ill-disciplined opponent.
