Smith fired up for title assault

Smith is desperate to show his best form against Quigley

Paul Smith Jnr has vowed to show his best form when he challenges fellow Liverpudlian Tony Quigley for the British super-middleweight title.

The two men will meet in Quigley's first title-defence, on Merseyside, at an as yet unconfirmed venue in October.

"I've always said give me plenty of notice, a title and a purse then you'll see the best of me," Smith told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"It's time to back that up and I will more than back it up."

Smith's promoter Frank Warren won the bidding process and with it the right to stage his man's assault on the Lonsdale Belt on Wednesday.

Warren is promising to stage the show in Liverpool but is still working to confirm the date.

"We're going to take it local and within the next seven days we'll announce the venue for it.

"We're looking towards the end of October, early November so that's when it'll be."

Whatever date they throw at me I'll be ready for it

Tony Quigley

For his part Tony Quigley says he is delighted the fight has now been confirmed.

"It feels real, there's a good fight in Liverpool ahead and it's time for everyone to start getting excited."

Quigley, 24, had to pull out of a proposed title defence against Brian Magee in July with a shoulder injury.

He says he will be fit to face city-rival Smith on the date, which is yet to be announced by the fight's promoter.

"It's starting to mend better and I'm moving forward with it so I should be punching with it in the next week,

"Whatever date they throw at me I'll be ready for it," said Quigley.

Given the fact there is little love lost between Quigley and Smith, their meeting in Liverpool is likely to take place in a pressure-cooker atmosphere.

The pressure is just part and parcel of the job

Paul Smith Jnr

Neither is fazed by that prospect, with both having openly campaigned for the fight to be held in their home city.

Smith, 26, says he cannot wait to soak up the big-fight atmosphere: "It's exciting as I haven't fought in a big arena in Liverpool, so if it's going to be somewhere big I can't wait to get it on.

"The pressure is just part and parcel of the job."

Both men will go into the fight on the back of wins. Tony Quigley beat Tony Dodson to take the British title in March, while Paul Smith Jnr beat Czech opponent Michal Bilak recently.
