Gavin was Britain's first ever amateur world champion |
Birmingham welterweight Frankie Gavin is expecting his toughest fight yet on Saturday but is certain he will extend his unbeaten run as a professional. The 23-year-old fights York's Graham Fern in Manchester after winning both his professional contests so far. "He looks quite strong but as long as I do what I do I'll come out victorious," Gavin told BBC WM. "I think this is going to be my hardest fight yet but I'm in better shape and am fitter and stronger." Gavin goes into Saturday's fight at the MEN Arena off the back of two wins - against George Kadaria and Mourad Frarema - and he admits he has learnt a lot from those different bouts. "Yeah, one was a little stocky kid who came to fight and one was someone tall with long arms who came to go the distance," he said. | My nan was my biggest fan and I've got her name on my shorts and I'm going to dedicate this next win to her |
"I've had two tough opponents compared to some of the other Olympians and I think I've got one of the toughest again - he's got a winning record and has never been stopped." Gavin is part of the undercard of Amir Khan's rescheduled world title fight against Andreas Kotelnik that was originally due to take place in London in June. The event was delayed after Kotelnik developed a tooth infection but the wait has not disrupted Gavin's preparations for his own fight. "It was good really because my nan died two weeks before my last fight so it's a lot better with this (delay) because it's given my time to get over it. "My nan was my biggest fan and I've got her name on my shorts and I'm going to dedicate this next win to her," Gavin said.
