Dodson had a bruising British title challenge in March |
Liverpool super-middleweight fighter Tony Dodson has been named as the mandatory challenger for Paul David's English title. The two men must now meet before the end of November. "I've got a letter from the British Boxing Board of Control stating that I'm to challenge Paul David," he told BBC Radio Merseyside. "I gave up the English title because I wanted to pursue the British title, now I've got to take a different route." The 28-year-old former British champion lost his most recent challenge for the Lonsdale belt to fellow Liverpudlian Tony Quigley in March. While disappointed to lose by a 12th-round stoppage Dodson says he is fully focused on getting himself back into British title contention, starting with a win against Sheffield's David. "The English title would put me next in line to fight for the British one. "Me and Paul David know each other, I don't like the kid as he's a bit arrogant for me but he's a good strong fighter, he'll come to fight and he'll come to win," added Dodson. Dodson and David go back some distance with the two men having been scheduled to meet previously. On that occasion the then English champion Dodson gave up the belt to focus on a proposed British title challenge against Brian Magee. The two men have endured an uneasy relationship since, with Dodson stung by criticism from David in a press conference. "He doesn't know anything about me, he thinks he knows about boxing and he doesn't know anything he's a novice." Meanwhile Tony Dodson's next outing, which was scheduled for 4 July at the Liverpool Olympia, has been postponed after promoters Hayemaker Boxing cancelled the show. The show's future had been cast into some doubt last week, when the top-of-the-bill fight between British super-middleweight champion Tony Quigley and Brain Magee fell through due to a shoulder injury sustained by Quigley.
