Lee McAllister stopped Ghana's Godfred Sowah in the third round to become the new Commonwealth lightweight champion.

McAllister landed a superb right hook one minute and 43 seconds into the third to lift the Commonwealth title that had been left vacant by Amir Khan.

"I'm overwhelmed as I have always wanted to win the Commonwealth title," said the 26-year-old McAllister.

"This was the most important fight of my life. I had to keep control and perform to the best of my ability."

After a tentative start from both fighters at the Aberdeen Beach Ballroom, McAllister seized the initiative by landing a few early jabs.

In the second round, Sowah was caught by a quickfire combination with McAllister and it was all over in the next round when the Scot produced that right hook to floor the Ghanaian.

McAllister has now won 29 of his 31 contests and there have been suggestions he could next face an all-Scottish fight against Gary McArthur.

"I'm going to have a nice rest now and take a month off and then I will take things from there," said McAllister. "I'm not interested in anyone in particular just now - I'm just going to enjoy this win."

McArthur defeated Polish fighter Arek Malek on points in Clydebank last weekend to keep alive the prospect of a £100,000 clash for the Commonwealth title.
