Cleverly has won all 15 of his fights, five by knock-out |
Nathan Cleverly defended his Commonwealth light-heavyweight title with a second-round stoppage of Billy Boyle at London's York Hall. Cefn Fforest man Cleverly had far too much class for his Sheffield rival, and Boyle's corner waved the fight off two minutes and 27 seconds into the round. Cleverly stepped in to headline the bill after British welterweight champion Kell Brook was injured. The 22-year-old is now undefeated in 16 pro fights, with six knockouts. His next fight will be for the vacant British title against Danny McIntosh, which is inked in for 18 July in Norwich. That title was recently vacated by Dean Francis. | 606: DEBATE |
On the same bill, Dagenham super-featherweight Kevin Mitchell returned to action with a third-round stoppage of Ghana's Lanquaye Wilson. Mitchell has been out of the ring for 11 months after having surgery on his left hand, but was still far too sharp for his unorthodox opponent. The 24-year-old is ranked number one by the WBO and should challenge champion Roman Martinez, who took the title from Mitchell's good friend Nicky Cook in March, later this year. London heavyweight Derek Chisora outpointed Melton Mowbray's Paul Butlin over eight rounds to set up a British heavyweight clash with champion Danny Williams, possibly in July. However, Chisora may face action from the British Boxing Board of Control after appearing to bite Butlin's ear in the fifth round. Referee Dave Parris did not see the incident and Chisora denied it had happened after the fight, but replays seemed to contradict him and he may be slapped with a fine.
