Tributes are being paid to former British and Commonwealth champion welterweight Cliff Curvis from Swansea, who has died at the age of 81.

He won the titles in 1952 against Wally Thom, having lost a previous challenge for the British belt in 1950 against fellow Welshman Eddie Thomas.

Curvis is survived by his brother Brian, 73, who was also a British and Commonwealth welterweight champion.

Their nephew Clifford, said the family was proud of both uncles' achievements.

Clifford Curvis senior's first professional fight was in 1944 against Bryn Collins - the first of seven wins in a row.

He recovered from his defeat by Frankie Williams in 1946 and achieved one of his biggest wins against local rival Ronnie James at the Drill Hall in Swansea in 1947.

His career record stands at 42 wins, 12 losses and one draw.
